How it works

  1. The preset is set to 600 × 600 px, JPEG, up to 240 KB.
  2. Drop your photo. It is cropped around the centre to the exact shape, then compressed until it fits.
  3. Check the row: size, pixels, and whether it cleared the minimum.
  4. Download, and upload it to the portal.

Before you upload

  • Start from a photo taken against a plain white or off-white wall with the head centred; the tool crops to a square around the centre, so leave room on all sides.
  • The checker also looks at the content of the photo (head size, eyes open, no glasses). Those rules are on the official page and no file tool can fix them.
  • A 600 pixel square JPEG is rarely above 120 KB, so the 240 KB limit is usually met at high quality; the preset still enforces it.

Questions

Is 600 × 600 the minimum or the exact size?

The minimum. The portal accepts any square between 600 and 1200 pixels. The preset outputs 600 × 600 by default, which is the safest for the file size limit; choose 1200 in the options if you have a sharp original.

Does the same file work for the DV lottery?

The Diversity Visa entry form uses the same digital image rules, including the 240 KB ceiling.

Can I use a scanned print?

Yes, if it is scanned at 300 DPI or more and then cropped square. A 2 × 2 inch print at 300 DPI is 600 × 600 pixels exactly.
