Why convert PNG to WEBP

WebP keeps transparency like PNG while compressing like JPG, which makes it the best format for logos and UI graphics on a website. Converting a PNG with a transparent background to WebP often cuts the file by 60 to 80 percent.

What changes in the file

At the default quality WebP is lossy, so very fine edges may soften slightly. The alpha channel is preserved exactly. Safari added WebP support in 2020, so modern browsers all display it, but many application forms still refuse it.

Does WebP keep transparency?

Yes. Transparent areas stay transparent, which is the main reason to choose WebP over JPG for graphics.

Is WebP lossless here?

The browser encoder is lossy with a quality setting. Quality 100 is close to lossless for most graphics; for exact pixels, keep the PNG.

Where should I not use WebP?

Government and exam portals, many email clients and older CMS uploaders. If a form lists JPG or PNG only, convert to one of those instead.
