How it works

  1. The preset is set to 413 × 531 px, JPG, 20 KB to 200 KB.
  2. Drop your photo. It is cropped around the centre to the exact shape, then compressed until it fits.
  3. Check the row: size, pixels, and whether it cleared the minimum.
  4. Download, and upload it to the portal.

Before you upload

  • UPSC publishes a size band, not a pixel size. The preset uses 413 × 531 pixels, a 3.5 × 4.5 cm passport photo at 300 DPI, which lands between about 60 and 150 KB at high quality, inside the band.
  • Rename the download to photo.jpg before uploading; the instructions ask for that exact file name.
  • The live photo is matched against this upload, so use a recent photo that looks like you today: same hairstyle, and no glasses if you will not wear them at the camera.

Questions

Is the rule 20 to 200 KB or 20 to 300 KB?

20 KB to 200 KB, according to the instruction document on the UPSC application portal on the date shown above. Some coaching sites still quote 300 KB from older cycles; the portal enforces the current document.

Do I need a particular pixel size?

No pixel size is published. Any sharp passport-style photo inside the size band passes the file check; the preset's 413 × 531 is a convention, not a UPSC rule, and you can change it in the options.

Does this preset also cover the signature?

No. The signature is a separate JPG with three signatures stacked vertically, 20 to 100 KB and 350 to 500 pixels; it has its own preset.
